UK Government announces a further extension to its ban on commercial evictions

The UK Government has announced a further three-month extension on the ban on commercial evictions and residential tenants will also be supported as the ban on bailiff-enforced evictions in all but the most serious circumstances and the requirement for landlords to provide six-month notice periods to tenants before they evict will also be extended.

The ban on commercial evictions extended to 30 June while the extension on residential evictions will last until at least 31 May.

The decision on commercial property evictions is aimed at helping the businesses "worst affected by the pandemic", get back to business in May when doors fully reopen for the hospitality sector.

Housing Secretary, Robert Jenrick said: "It is right that as we move through the roadmap, we ensure that businesses and renters continue to be supported."

The Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng MP, added: "We’re doing everything we can to ensure businesses get the support they need to get through this pandemic and reopen when it is safe to do so."

The Government's moratorium on the eviction of commercial tenants was first introduced during the pandemic's first national lockdown and was extended in June, September and December 2020, In December, the three-month extension was described by the Government as the "final extension."
